2. Posture, tone and Intonation 

Left side readiness; Right side readiness; sitting beautifully with balance....Tone ringing, rich and strong.....accurate intonation 

3. Fingerings and Bowings
Perfect fingerings..... Organized shifts ..... Perfect bowing..... Bowing with a 

focus on bow distribution.....Performing with ease 

After memorizing fingerings and bowings, some players thought they were “done”! Now you are ready for a lesson on this piece... 

4. Make the notes into music
Create different kinds of tone in each section......Use a variety of bow 

speeds where appropriate......Make obvious phrases where the composer intended them......Give each phrase a shape.... Use Vibrato, and different kinds of vibrato......Find the important note in each phrase. This means there are notes leading up to that important note, and notes going away from that note. 

5. The world of “Objective Expression”
= what do we expect to hear in this piece? 

Articulations: shorts, longs, accents, legato, slurs, staccato....some notes are “light” and some “heavy” etc.
Dynamics: Hearing soft phrases or sections, loud phrases or sections where they belong. Crescendos and diminuendos where they belong; Then create a “dynamic shape” for the piece of music 

Indications in the music: know what each musical term means, and know how to carry it out.
Rhythms, Rhythmic Pulse, and groove
Style: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Early and Late 20th century. Know the differences between them.

Let dynamics be sound colors.... Let the piece, in your hands, tell your story.....Convey an unforgettable message....Paint a picture.... How can you make your performance compelling, keeping the attention of the audience engaged?..... “Sell” that piece to the audience, so your performance is the one they want! Each phrase has a beginning, middle and end. Each piece has a beginning, middle and end..... 

7. Keep Going!:
Watch great performances on Youtube. What makes those performances great? Move like they do...Emote like they do... Be masterful and dramatic like they are...it should be impossible to “get 

tired” of a piece, while we can “get tired” of our approach to a piece....
